Road accidents have taken the lives of about 950 children, ranging in age from one

to 14, sine 1999. The number is likely to increase if parents continue to shun safety

instructions for children travelling in cars, said Dr. Adisak Plitponkarnpim, chief of the

Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Centre, Department of

Paediatrics, Ramathibodi Hospital.

“Road accidents are the second major cause of death for Thai children. The death

Toll is appalling.  The injury figure is currently in excess of 2000000 children a year.”

Dr. Adisak said.

The main risk factor is the failure to use safety equipment, such as restraints for

Young children.

Generally, there are four types of restraint system tailored for children of different

age and weight ranges: an  infant car bed is suitable for newborns: a rear – facing child

seat for babies up to one year old: a forward – facing seat for toddlers aged one to five;

and a booster seat for kids between the ages of five and10.

A green turtle, a rare sight in these parts for 40 years, laid eggs on Koh Samui

earlier this month.

Pornsak Sakthai, Koh Samui’s fisheries chief, said a big green turtle had nested on

a beach in front of Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan’s holiday home on

Nathian bay

Mr. Pornsak said he looked at the animal’s traces and thought the turtle was about

60 centimetres wide and weighed more than 70 kilogrammes.

The turtle dug three holes to lay eggs on June 11. The eggs from two nests were

stolen, leaving 100 eggs in the third. Mr. Pornsak said a green turtle normally could lay

eggs five times over a two – week period. He believed the mother turtle would return to

the beach again soon. The eggs would hatch in 52 days, in early August, he said.

Mr. Pornsak said he would get staff to guard the beach a week before hatching to

prevent theft. Killing sea turtles and taking away their eggs is illegal, punishable by up

to four years in jail and/or  a fine of 40,000 bahts.

Green turtles have all but gone from Koh Samui but are often seen laying eggs in

Then suddenly, at above 12500 feet, Leonardo Diaz hears a familiar ring.

Out of nowhere, a phone company solicitor is calling on his cellphone, asking if he

would like to buy more time.

“We called him to remind him that his cellphone was out of minutes> He said it was

the work of an angel, because he was lost in the (Andes,)” said Maria del Pilar Basto,

the Bell South operator who called Mr. Diaz.

Ms. Basto called for help, and she and other operators kept ringing Mr. Diaz to keep

him awake and help ward off hypothermia.

Mr. Diaz was able to keep talking to her until rescue teams arrived seven hours

later – with the frigid temperatures acting as natural recharger for his two cellphone

batteries which he buried in the snow for about half an hour.
